Front End Engineer
Starboard
About Starboard
Starboard is building the default agentic OS for global trade. We write software to help freight forwarders. If you don’t know what a freight forwarder is – no worries, we will teach you! In short, they are responsible for logistics of moving physical things across the planet. It’s an underserved market, ripe for disruption with AI. Our software ingests complex rate sheets (pricing for moving shipping containers, air cargo, trucking) and uses agentic and deterministic programming to accurately store these rates in a structured database. Our software then helps the forwarders quote rapidly. We have agents that operate directly from the freight forwarders email inbox, and a webapp. Our stack is PostgreSQL & PostGIS, Next.js (frontend), Python (backend, agents), Golang (API). Our vision is to build the automated global marketplace for freight.
We’ve raised over $5.5M from top investors in SF and Toronto including Eclipse Capital, Garuda Ventures, OTPP and Everywhere Ventures and are HQ’d in Toronto and NY.
The Role
We’re looking for a Front-End Engineer to take us to the next level of UI/UX. If you have vision, skills and a desire to build something to help people work faster and smarter, then we want to meet you.
You’ll build the interfaces where humans and autonomous agents work together: reviewing inbound emails, uploading and interpreting rate sheets, generating quotes, overriding agent outputs, and managing complex, route-dependent pricing data.
This is a product-first frontend role with real ownership. You’ll work closely with founders, backend, and ML engineers to turn messy, real-world logistics workflows into fast, intuitive tools that customers trust.
In this role you will:
Build and own data-dense frontend workflows for quoting, rates, routes, fees, and customer overrides.
-
Develop UI for both:
Email extensions (email-triggered agent actions, side-panel workflows), and
a web app for manual uploads, quote building, and rate management.
Translate complex agent outputs into clear, reviewable, and editable UI states.
Design frontend architecture for multi-step workflows, async actions, and edge cases.
Collaborate with backend/ML engineers on API contracts, schemas, and event-driven updates.
Improve UX, reliability, and performance of an existing (buggy) product—shipping fast and iterating.
Why You Should Join Us
Build the foundational AI infrastructure for one of the largest critical industries in the world ($2T+ global trade).
Work directly with deeply invested founders and a lightning-fast engineering culture.
Ship products that immediately touch real revenue with global customers.
Solve unstructured, messy real-world problems at massive scale.
Competitive compensation and equity ownership in a company redefining how global trade operates.
Qualifications
3–7+ years building production frontend applications.
Strong experience with TypeScript and React (or similar modern framework).
Experience building complex, operational UIs (tables, forms, workflows, stateful views).
Comfort working with async data, API-driven state, and conditional logic.
Strong product sense—you care about clarity, trust, and usability as much as code.
A scrappy, high-ownership mindset; you move fast and fix what’s broken.
Willingness to occasionally touch backend surfaces, but frontend is your focus.
Nice to Haves:
Experience with B2B SaaS, marketplaces, logistics, fintech, or other complex domains.
Experience building browser extensions or embedded tools.
Exposure to AI-powered or agent-assisted products.
Early-stage startup experience is an asset
