- Provide in-person physical, emotional, and educational support during labor and delivery, including hands-on comfort measures such as massage, counter-pressure, and use of a birthing ball.
- Assist with positioning techniques to support labor progress and comfort (e.g., using a peanut ball, encouraging movement, laboring in the bath or shower).
- Help the birthing person advocate for themselves by reinforcing birth preferences and facilitating communication with the clinical team.
- Listen to the concerns and questions of the client and their family in a kind, non-judgmental way, and offer evidence-based, non-medical advice.
- Provide practical and emotional support throughout the childbirth process, including reassurance and real-time coping strategies.
- Support the birthing person during epidural anesthesia placement should they desire regional anesthesia.
- Support the birthing person in the operating room should a Cesarean Delivery be required, including emotional support and initiating skin-to-skin contact.
- Round on postpartum patients to provide education, support, and lactation guidance in collaboration with the nurses and lactation consultants.
- Keep up to date on care protocols by conducting research, networking with other Doulas, and attending workshops and lectures. Participation in unit huddles, interdisciplinary communication, and post-event debriefings as appropriate.
- Demonstrate strong communication, adaptability, and collaboration skills, including the ability to give and receive feedback from Labor & Delivery staff in a respectful and professional manner.
- Anticipate the emotional and physical needs of the birthing person with attentiveness, patience, and empathy.
- Build trust and rapport quickly with clients and families through warmth, active listening, and a calming bedside manner.
- Maintain charting notes following HIPAA protocols. Must complete all hospital-required learning modules annually, including HIPAA, infection control, and patient safety.
