Editorial Operations Manager - Contract
New Wine Review
Hello! We’re The New Wine Review, a next-generation, subscription-based digital media startup for wine lovers.
We need someone with serious wine knowledge (see below) to run our editorial operations. We’re still a small and scrappy startup, so you’ll need to hit the ground running. We’re looking for someone who can do that with real proficiency, grace, and good humor.
About the job
In this position, you’ll:
Manage the day-to-day editorial operations—for our website, newsletters, and other exciting projects that we are currently developing–for an upstart digital media property that covers one of the world’s most fascinating topics.
Work closely with the editor in chief to plan the editorial calendar, and take a lead role in ensuring writers and editors (including the editor in chief) hit their deadlines.
Copy edit in accordance with our style guide.
Produce stories for WordPress, and ensure we are using SEO best practices.
Write and edit stories—though that will not be the focus on your job—and contribute ideas for stories, editorial concepts, and editorial packages.
Be an active participant in our subscriber-only Slack, and ensure that it is as fun, informative, and awesome for everyone as possible.
Improve our systems for editorial management, social media, and industry outreach, and serve as our lead contact to importers and distributors.
Assist with social media posting and management.
Help us stay on top of news and developments in the wine and spirits world.
Contribute items to our weekly Deals/Values/Finds and Week In Wine features.
About us
Well, take a look at our website, if you haven’t already.
Our team is made up of a far-flung group of alums from The New York Times, The Atlantic, Wine Spectator, Bon Appetit, Axios, Los Angeles Magazine, Inc., Punch, Quartz, Refinery29, Politico, and elsewhere. Since we got out of beta mode at the end of February. we’ve been written about in the New York Times, and we’ve appeared on podcasts like this one.
This is a full-time remote position, but being based in New York would be a plus. We're looking for 40 hours per week for an initial term of three months, with the possibility to extend or become a full-time employee role in the future. The rate will be $675 per week.
About you
We’re looking for someone who is:
Deeply knowledgeable about wine: And we do mean deep. WSET level 3 or above would be a major plus. Yearslong daily exposure to wine and wine culture–for instance, at a wine retailer, as a somm, or as a writer and editor–would work too.
Very nerdy about wine, and obsessed with it in a way that most people don’t understand. This is not a job for normal people who have a casual interest in wine. Also, your sensibility should skew heavily towards the low-intervention producers found at the smartest wine shops and wine bars in any given city. To put this more plainly: if you read Wine Spectator and go ‘yeah, these are the wines for me’—you’re probably not right for this job.
A great systematizer: You’re organized. You’re comfortable with ambiguity, but enjoy taming chaos. You love creating systems. You like finding faster, better ways of doing things.
A great doer: You’re strategic and creative, but most of all, you get things done. You’re efficient. You’re comprehensive and detail-oriented. You like plowing through a checklist.
A great entrepreneurial spirit: You move fast. You’re always looking for angles and opportunities. You find solutions to hard problems. You do what needs to be done to succeed. You pitch in. You pack boxes. You go well beyond the letter of your job description.
A great person: You’re smart, fun, funny, empathetic, and kind.
If you’re interested, send us an email at info@newwinereview.com and attach a resume and a cover letter that explains why you’re the ideal candidate for this role.
