About the job

Our mission

Boom is on a mission to level the playing field for the 110+ million renters in the US by making housing more flexible, affordable, and rewarding. Boom is building a suite of rental financial services for renters and property managers, including tenant screening, rent payment reporting, rent reporting-as-a-service, and a number of integrations with the largest property management systems (PMS). Boom serves renters through the Boom App and property managers via the Boom Platform. Now serving thousands of renters, Boom is led by second-time founder Rob Whiting (ex-BCG, Rubicon). It's backed by investors such as Starting Line, Clocktower Ventures, Gilgamesh Ventures (Petal co-founders), and angels such as William Hockey and Zach Perret (Co-founders of Plaid) and Harry Stebbings. Boom has been profiled by Inman, Business Insider, HousingWire, and more.

Opportunity

The QA Engineer owns product quality, reliability, and consistency across the Boom platform. You'll run manual and exploratory testing, identify bugs, and verify quality across web, mobile, and our integrations, with a focus on customer impact, edge cases, and release readiness.

At Boom, quality directly affects property manager trust and renter experience. A payment that fails, a report that breaks, or a workflow that confuses users erodes confidence fast. You'll partner closely with product, engineering, and customer success to catch issues before they reach customers, document clean reproduction steps, and advocate for the fixes that matter most.

This is a hands-on testing role for someone who enjoys breaking things to make them better and thrives in a fast-paced environment. For this role, we are hiring for candidates in Austin, TX, where our leadership and product team is located. Comp range listed is directional and adjustable +/- based on competency.

What you'll do

  • Run manual and exploratory testing across new features, regressions, and edge cases. Validate behavior across browsers, operating systems, and mobile devices
  • Test third-party integrations (payment processors, accounting systems, banking partners) for data accuracy and reliability
  • Own final QA sign-off for production releases. Critical paths work or we don't ship
  • Maintain regression suites and catch unintended side effects from new code or config changes
  • Write clear, reproducible bug reports with screenshots, repro steps, expected vs actual behavior, and severity. Verify fixes in staging and production
  • Partner with PMs and engineers to clarify requirements, reproduce issues, and ship customer-focused tests grounded in real user workflows
  • Maintain test cases, checklists, and QA standards so quality holds up as we scale

What you'll need

  • 2+ years of QA or software testing experience, ideally on web and mobile in SaaS or fintech
  • Strong analytical instincts. You assess product behavior beyond the documented acceptance criteria and proactively clarify requirements when they're vague or incomplete
  • Clean, structured bug reports are second nature: repro steps, screenshots, severity, expected vs actual
  • Comfortable with browser dev tools, network inspection, basic debugging, and API integration testing
  • Daily use of AI tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) for test case generation, exploratory testing, and scripting. We use AI heavily across the team and expect new hires to do the same
  • Balance thoroughness with speed in a fast-moving startup environment
  • Strong written communicator who collaborates cross-functionally with product and engineering
  • Plus: experience testing payment flows, financial systems, or compliance-sensitive features; exposure to test automation or scripting
  • Empathy for our end users, including low-to-moderate-income renters, and a desire to build products that make a difference

Benefits of working at Boom

  • Competitive salary with stock options
  • Full healthcare coverage (health, dental, vision) including 50% coverage for dependents
  • 15 days of Paid Time Off (PTO) per year + 3 sick days + all US federal holidays (11 in total) (note: we think unlimited PTO is BS and causes some employees to feel guilty when they take it)
  • Company-issued laptop/MacBook
  • Company-sponsored training & development
  • Regular off-sites, retreats, and other company-sponsored events and travel opportunities
